Albertsons Companies is investing in El Rancho Supermercado, a Texas-based retailer with Latino-centric stores.
Cheese retail sales were essentially flat (-0.2%) for 2017 year-to-date period through September vs. year ago. Year-to-date, many natural varieties are seeing growth, but these volume increases have not been strong enough overcome significant losses for processed cheese.
Fluid Milk retail sales were down -2.5% year-to-date (thru Q3), a slightly more accelerated loss vs. 2016. Whole-fat milk continues to post growth and is now in its fourth year of increase (up 3.2% YTD). The whole fat trend links to both science and consumer trends.
Yogurt retail sales remained depressed. Year-to-date, through Q3 2017, sales volume was down -5.3 percent. This volume decline continues the softer sales trend observed for yogurt in the latter half of 2016. Certain yogurt segments continue to see strong growth. Contributing the largest volume to growth are yogurt drinks (up 16.5%) and whole fat yogurts (up 20.5%).

Bristol Farms has debuted a new store format in Woodland Hills, Calif., focused around a food hall that offers goods from hundreds of local vendors. The 25,000-square-foot store also includes a wine and spirits cave and a cafe called The Daily, which serves Intazza coffee.
Ahold Delhaize is suspending its Bfresh banner of smaller-format, urban-focused grocery stores. The chain will close its 3,700-sq. ft. Everything Fresh store in Philadelphia, PA, which was opened as a prototype for the smaller-format stores, and its Bfresh store in Brighton, MA. Ahold plans to integrate the Bfresh brand in the Boston, MA, area with its Stop & Shop banner, reported Philly.com.
Schwan’s Co. created Schwan’s Strategic Partner Solutions, a business unit focused on growing the company’s private-label and contract-packing businesses with select retailers and manufacturers. Pizza will be a focus for the unit, but other products will include ice cream, pies, snacks and appetizers, smoothies, sauces and aluminum packaging. Joe Pacinelli will lead the unit.
